What is knee replacement surgery?

During a total knee replacement, damaged tissue is removed and the knee joint is resurfaced and replaced using an artificial joint. This surgery may be an option for you if you suffer from advanced arthritis of the knee or joint problems that limit basic activities. When other treatments are unsuccessful, MedStar Orthopaedic Institute offers advanced approaches to knee replacement surgery and can address the most complex knee conditions. We use state of the art technologies, which promote a safe and successful outcome after your knee replacement surgery.

Why is knee replacement surgery performed?

The most common conditions that require treatment by total knee replacement surgery include the following:

What does knee replacement surgery involve?

Our skilled physicians at MedStar Orthopaedic Institute offer a few different approaches to knee replacement surgery. These may include:

  • Partial (uni-compartmental) knee replacement – In partial knee replacement, your surgeon removes only the damaged portion of your knee, leaving the healthy parts untouched. Only one compartment is replaced, compared with three compartments in a full knee replacement.
  • Total knee replacement – When there is extensive knee osteoarthritis, total knee replacement surgery, is performed. With this procedure, the entire surfaces of the femur, tibia, and patella (or knee cap) is replaced and deformities of the leg and knee can be corrected.
  • Computer-assisted knee replacement surgery – Computer-assisted surgery aligns bones and replacement implants with a degree of accuracy that would be impossible with the naked eye. This approach reduces wear and tear to increase the longevity of the new joint.

What does knee replacement surgery recovery involve?

After surgery, you will begin a physical therapy routine designed to help you regain your strength, balance, and mobility. Most patients return directly home after surgery, while some go to a rehabilitation hospital for more physical therapy. As with other joint surgeries, patients must do hourly exercises to strengthen the joint and regain mobility. Patients strive to walk with a cane—or unassisted—within six weeks of surgery. Initial recovery takes about six to eight weeks and often continues for a full year.

Additionally,MedStar Orthopaedic Institute patients also have access to Patient Care Coordinators (PaCC), who will help you with the following post-surgery needs:

  • Managing your transitions to each level of care
  • Providing patient and family education
  • Ensuring a safe discharge plan that meets all of your medical needs and preferences
