What is total hip replacement surgery?
In a total hip replacement, the damaged bone and cartilage is replaced with a prosthetic, or artificial, hip component. The goal of total hip replacement surgery, also referred to as total hip arthroplasty, is to help relieve your pain and improve your quality of life and hip function. At MedStar Orthopaedic Institute, we offer the most advanced approaches to hip replacement surgery, using innovative technologies to promote the safest and most successful outcomes possible.
Why is total hip replacement performed?
You may be a good candidate for hip replacement surgery at MedStar Orthopaedic Institute if you suffer from any of the below hip conditions:
- Osteoarthritis of the hip
- Hip osteonecrosis
- Rheumatoid arthritis of the hip
- Hip injury
- Bone tumors on the hip
What does total hip replacement involve?
Prior to your total hip replacement procedure, your surgeon may use robotic-assisted technologies, which capture the exact location of the joint prior to surgery. This ensures a precise and safe procedure. During surgery, the damaged portions of your hip are removed and replaced with an artificial hip called a prosthesis, or a device that substitutes or supplements the joint. The prosthesis consists of three components: a socket, ball, and stem. The outer shell of the socket is usually made of metal and the inner shell consists of plastic, or the entire socket may be plastic. When the ceramic ball is joined with the socket, the new hip allows for smooth, nearly frictionless movement.
What does total hip replacement recovery involve?
The recovery process from total hip replacement will take time. Your orthopedic surgeon will work with you to develop a rehabilitation plan that begins while you’re still in the hospital and continues until you feel completely healed. Typical recoveries include physical therapy exercises to regain your strength, pain management, and learning safe new ways to move and bend.
At MedStar Orthopaedic Institute, we go a step further to provide you with a personal Patient Care Coordinator (PaCC), who will guide you throughout your hip replacement recovery period. Your PaCC will:
- Provide you with patient and family education resources
- Manage your transitions to each level of care
- Ensure a safe discharge plan that meets all of your medical needs and preferences
