Orthotics

At MedStar Orthopaedic Institute, our expert foot and ankle specialists provide the most comprehensive care for anyone with foot pain who can benefit from orthotics. Our physicians are fellowship-trained with years of experience providing foot and ankle pain relief. We will work with you to understand your personal orthotic needs and help you move toward a pain-free lifestyle.

What are foot orthotics?

Orthotics are worn to correct your foot’s alignment and function. An orthopedist will often recommend orthotics for people who have foot pain when walking, including arch pain associated with flat feet.

Why are orthotics used?

Your doctor may recommend orthotics for you if you have one or more of the following:

  • Flat feet
  • Bunions
  • IT band syndrome
  • Muscle fatigue in the feet
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Overpronation
  • Injuries affecting the lower extremities
  • Foot pain when walking or standing

What does getting orthotics involve?

First, we spend time with you to thoroughly evaluate and diagnose your specific problem. If we decide that you are a good candidate for orthotics, we offer you several options, which can include:

  • Orthotic shoes
  • Orthotic inserts/insoles
  • Braces
  • Shoe modifications
  • Custom orthotic shoes

We work with you to determine what specific device will be most effective for you. Depending on your needs, we can provide the device you need either onsite or through a referral. Our pedorthic and orthotists specialize in fitting you and developing whatever customized device you need.

What are the benefits of using orthotics?

Our goal is for you to experience the following benefits after visiting one of our experienced physicians for custom orthotics:

  • Foot pain relief
  • Improved ability to walk
  • Increased comfort when standing
  • Ability to return to walking or standing for longer periods of time
