What is elbow arthroscopy surgery?
Elbow arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that uses an arthroscope (thin, flexible tube) to access your affected joints and project an image of them on a large screen. This image guides your orthopedic surgeon, who uses specialized instruments through the arthroscope to repair any damage.
Why is elbow arthroscopy performed?
This minimally invasive surgery uses smaller incisions than traditional open surgical techniques. Elbow arthroscopy also causes less pain and allows you to recover faster and more easily.
We can use minimally invasive elbow arthroscopy to treat conditions including:
What does arthroscopic elbow surgery involve?
During elbow arthroscopy, you are sedated and very small incisions are made around your elbow joint. A small camera is then inserted into the joint, which creates images to guide your surgeon during the procedure. When diseased muscles are found, our doctors can remove them and attach healthy muscle to the bone in its place. You can usually leave the hospital on the same day as your surgery, with physical therapy beginning shortly after.
What does elbow arthroscopy recovery involve?
At MedStar Orthopaedic Institute, our specialists work with each patient to establish a treatment plan based on your individual situation and needs. Recovery from arthroscopic surgery generally includes wearing a splint for a short time, followed by physical therapy. Additionally, our therapists teach you to maximize your range of motion while preventing re-injury or worsening of the condition. Your orthopedic surgeon will discuss the specific details of your recovery with you prior to your procedure.
What are the benefits of undergoing elbow arthroscopy?
Our goal is for you to experience the following benefits after having elbow arthroscopy surgery:
- Elbow pain relief
- Restored range of motion in the elbow and arm
- Improved arm strength
- Ability to return to normal activities faster than with traditional surgery
